OK Go Launches Fall North American Tour In Los Angeles On October 3rd

OK Go Partners With Indaba Music and the Rock Band Network For Remix Contest Of Thier New Single, “White Knuckles”
Producer Dave Fridmann to Curate Contest

(Los Angeles, CA) OK Go, the most downloaded band ever, will launch an extensive North American tour with a performance at the Los Angeles County Fair on October 3rd. Tickets are on sale now. In addition to its headlining dates, the band will perform at the Discover Louisville Festival (10/12) and the PopTech Conference (10/21, Camden, ME), an annual event that convenes a network of visionary individuals in science, technology, design, the corporate and social sectors, entrepreneurship, education and the arts to explore the nature of creative change. OK Go will also perform at the MTV Brazil Music Awards on September 16th.

“This is what happens when you’re the most intelligent, most innovative, and merriest band of miscreants in rock,” said the Tampa Bay Times in a live review. “You’ve already reinvented the concept of the music video, and you’re doing everything you can to reinvent the music industry as a whole. What’s left? Reinvent the concert experience…a multisensory spectacle.” “It’s a visual adventure as much as it is an audio one in the vein of The Flaming Lips,” said Creative Loafing and the Salt Lake City Weekly marveled: “Getting Salt Lakers on the dance floor on a Tuesday is not a task every band is up to, but OK Go did the trick.”

OK Go have partnered with Indaba Music and the Rock Band Network to launch a remix contest for their new single, “White Knuckles.” OK Go encourages fans to get as creative as possible, to not feel afraid to redefine the song in both genre and feeling. The contest will run from September 7th through October 14th.

Each week starting Sept 21st, Dave Fridmann, producer of “White Knuckles” and the album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, will choose his favorite remixes to feature across all OK Go web properties. All featured remixes will also be available for fans to download on the database that accompanies the pre-order for the Nov. 2nd U.S. release, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (Extra Nice Edition). The grand prize winner will be announced on October 29th and will have his/her remix mastered and made available for download in Rock Band. The grand prize winner will also receive a gaming console, a copy of Rock Band 3, and a set of Rock Band instruments to jam with friends to their winning remix.

“White Knuckles,” the follow-up single to the Top 30 hit “This Too Shall Pass,” will impact at Alternative and AAA radio on September 14th. The album received 4 ½ stars from Alternative Press, while Spin hailed it as “ambitious” and absolutepunk.net pronounced it “wholly triumphant.” At mid-year, mtv.com’s Kyle Anderson named Of the Blue Colour of the Sky “the best album of the year (so far)…at the same time incredibly polished and casually chaotic – a fantastically vibrant, surprising combination. I’ve been listening to the album for six months and am still discovering things about it.”

The band’s second video for “This Too Shall Pass,” is a Rube Goldberg machine created by OK Go and Syyn Labs engineers, and is the #1 Top Rated (All Time) music video on YouTube.

OK Go – comprising Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Konopka and Andy Ross – recently contributed a track to the compilation album Dear New Orleans…, which benefits New Orleans-based non-profits working to support the region’s culture and community.

The band members have been strong advocates for internet neutrality, sharing their perspective with leaders on Capitol Hill. This past Sunday, Kulash published an Op-Ed piece on the topic in The Washington Post.

NEIL YOUNG TO RELEASE BRAND-NEW SOLO ALBUM, ENTITLED LE NOISE, ON SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2010, ON REPRISE RECORDS

Wed, 09/01/2010 - 16:01

NEIL YOUNG TO RELEASE BRAND-NEW SOLO ALBUM, ENTITLED LE NOISE, ON SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2010, ON REPRISE RECORDS

ROCKER COLLABORATED ON GUITAR-DRIVEN ALBUM WITH MUSICIAN, SONGWRITER, AND PRODUCER DANIEL LANOIS

Burbank, CA –Neil Young will release a brand-new solo album, entitled Le Noise, on September 28th on Reprise Records. The eight-song album is a collaboration between the acclaimed rock icon and musician, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois, known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others. As producer or co-producer Lanois won Grammy Awards in 1987, 1992, 1997, 2000, and 2001.

Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois’ performances at Young’s Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young’s performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson’s music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois’ home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, Le Noise features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just “a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording,” as Lanois puts it.

“Neil was so appreciative of the sonics that we presented to him,” Lanois says. “He walked in the door and I put an acoustic guitar into his hands — one that I had been working on to build a new sound. That’s the multi-layered acoustic sound that you hear on the songs ‘Love and War’ and ‘Peaceful Valley Boulevard.’ I wanted him to understand that I’ve spent years dedicated to the sonics in my home and that I wanted to give him something he’d never heard before. He picked up that instrument, which had everything — an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds — and he knew as soon as he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It’s hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of 50 years of rock and roll, but I think we did it.”

Le Noise will be released in several formats, including standard CD, vinyl, digital download, and as a deluxe CD/DVD. The DVD portion, shot by cinematographer Adam Vollick, will feature eight black and white films of Young performing each song solo on acoustic and electric guitar live in the studio. In November, Reprise will also release a Blu-Ray edition, featuring Lanois and Vollick’s beautifully shot films of Young.

Writing about Le Noise after hearing it at Lanois’ home, The Los Angeles Times commented: “What’s striking about Le Noise is the way it both summarizes and distills Young’s singular approach to music, predominantly just Neil and a guitar: his big, white hollow-body Gretsch electric slashing and burning for most of the tracks, a couple built around picked and strummed acoustic instruments. Both are recorded and amplified — literally and metaphorically — by Lanois’ signature soundscapes that loop vocals, and enhance the guitars’ bass notes through distortion boxes, synthesizers and other electronics.”

The track-listing for Le Noise is as follows:

Walk With Me
Sign of Love
Rescue Me
Love And War
Angry World
Hitchhiker
Peaceful Valley Blvd.

Summer Camp “Young” EP Out September 6th on Moshi Moshi

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 17:27

MOSHI MOSHI RECORDS PREPARE FOR RELEASE OF
SUMMER CAMP’S YOUNG EP

AVALIABLE DIGITALLY SEPTEMBER 6TH AND IN STORES THIS NOVEMBER

FULL-LENGTH DEBUT COMING SPRING 2011

Moshi Moshi Records proudly announce the September 6th release of Summer Camp’s Young EP. The EP marks the UK duo’s North American debut, and the latest release for the storied UK indie label on this side of the Atlantic. It also serves as a precursor to their forthcoming full-length debut, due out in Spring 2010.

Summer Camp started almost accidentally as a clandestine musical project by the London based duo Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley. Yet the strength of their hazy nostalgic take on John Hughes teen-dream inspired pop was not an easily confined secret, even if their identities and country of origin originally were. Their early single “Ghost Train” drew notice from tastemakers like Gorilla Vs. Bear, who became an early champion of the group whose bio was short on details and stocked with a few red herrings about summer camp in Sweden.

A year on, and with a UK 7″ release and some touring under their belt, The BBC writes that Summer Camp’s Young EP “comes crashing on, bristling with gems from a bygone era where the permanence of relationship drama has been sieved out.” The EP serves as a fitting introduction to a group with enough “pop juice on display to suggest that this is just the beginning.” This fall and winter sees the duo touring Europe and putting finishing touches on their full-length debut, due out some time in Spring 2011. Next year they plan to tour North America in support of its release.

The Chap Reveal their Day Jobs in New Video, Release Teengirl Fantasy Remix

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 17:25

THE CHAP DEBUT VIDEO FOR “WE WORK IN BARS,” RELEASE TEENGIRL FANTASY REMIX OF “EVEN YOUR FRIEND”

London/Berlin-based pop-manglers the Chap have debuted the video for their single, “We Work in Bars,” (available here for mp3 download) off their fourth album, Well Done Europe, on Lo Recordings. They are also releasing a Teengirl Fantasy remix of the track “Even Your Friend”.

To create the stop motion video, director Harry Rambaut made The Chap spend endless mornings in a North London boozer. He threw buckets of water and pints of ale at them, made them change facial expressions every five seconds for hours on end, and had them fall off a bar stools in twenty stages. In short: it took a long time to make. It was well worth the wait, though! We’ll drink to that!

Now putting their touch on the Chap’s second single off Well Done Europe, Teengirl Fantasy has come to prominence with their remixes of HEALTH, Memory House, These are Powers, Telepathe, Neon Indian and Light Asylum. Their remix of “Even Your Friend” (video for album version here) takes the frenetic pop of the original and adds a layer of haze and drops the tempo, resulting in a dream-pop take on the song miles away from the original.

Bend, Oregon-based The Source Weekly’s music editor Mike Bookey wrote about The Quick and Easy Boys that, “They’ve become, in a way, the ideal band – a three-piece rooted in rock and roll that wears its funk and honky tonk influences on its sleeve. Maybe this is what the Hold Steady would sound like if they came up in Oregon and not New York City.”

It’s true, the trio is a rare breed. Imagine a band equally influenced by the Minutemen, Funkadelic, and Willie Nelson, able to make you sing along, laugh, and just have a good time. The ultimate thinking man’s party band.

Portland’s alternative weekly, the Willamette Week, also wrote, “Self-describing your band as a hybrid of the Minutemen, Funkadelic, and Willie Nelson is a hell of a burden to place on yourself, but the three mustachioed dudes in the Quick & Easy Boys – in a festival full of musicians and audience members sporting ironic facial hair, were probably the only trio to rock their ‘staches genuinely – brought a serious ruckus to the 2pm outdoor stage, tearing through a set of vaguely countrified funk-punk anchored by the hyper-trebly, nimble-fingered fretwork of guitarist Jimmy Russell… there probably isn’t another band in Portland that sounds like this.”

Formed in 2005, The Quick & Easy Boys quickly made a name for themselves in Eugene, Oregon before heading north and building a Portland, Oregon fanbase. Their shows are an interactive party with electrifying stage antics and profound musical moments as the trio pours out every ounce of their energy, leaving nothing behind. The band has gained the reputation for moving a crowd all-night long whether it be a big festival or a tiny watering hole.

In 2008, they released their debut, “Bad Decisions With Good People,” which left people raving about their unique and vibrant sound, and in September of 2009, they sojourned out on their first United States tour. Two national tours are now planned for 2010 in support of their new release, “Red Light Rabbit.”

SAN DIEGO-BASED QUARTET ECHO REVOLUTION SET TO RELEASE MID-NOVEMBER FULL LENGTH ALBUM COUNTERFEIT SUNSHINE

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 07:44

SAN DIEGO-BASED QUARTET ECHO REVOLUTION SET TO RELEASE MID-NOVEMBER FULL LENGTH ALBUM COUNTERFEIT SUNSHINE PRODUCED AND ENGINEERED BY INDUSTRY NOTABLES STEVE CHURCHYARD (INXS, PRETENDERS) AND ALAN SANDERSON (WEEZER, ROLLING STONES)

San Diego, CA-based indie rock band Echo Revolution are a testament to the patience and persistence philosophy. Since its inception in 2003, the band has released three full length records. A chance meeting with noted Grammy award winning engineer Steve Churchyard (INXS, Pretenders) at a local music conference prompted frontman Lee Harding to keep in touch with him.

It wasn’t long before live audiences showed the band that their new songs “Open Your Eyes” and “Counterfeit Sunshine” were strong enough to go “all-out” for in recording. Pondering what would be the “Dream Team” to bring the best out of these songs, Churchyard immediately came to mind as producer alongside engineer Alan Sanderson (Weezer, Rolling Stones, Elton John, etc.) with whom the band already had worked. When Harding brought up Steve’s name to Alan, he said “Are you kidding?! He was my mentor. I learned everything I know from Steve.” The interesting connections didn’t end there — Steve had worked under Beatles producer George Martin in his earlier days in England and Harding learned to sing and play guitar imitating The Beatles. Could this be fate?

Steve was gracious enough to offer the band a good recording deal and the rest is now recorded history. Both Alan and Steve commented on the work as being one of the most memorable sessions they had ever done. Echo Revolution now had enough music for an EP but they decided to challenge themselves and release a full length and finished with Mike Kamoo at Earthling Studios, with whom they had worked on their first album.
Spawned by the British invasion and the new wave revolution, Echo Revolution’s music has been featured in MTV programs Jersey Shore (2010), Real World (2008) and MTV Gauntlet II (2007). The band’s last album A Safe Place to Start (2008) was played on nearly 150 college, public and commercial radio stations in the US including CMJ charting on several stations.

BUILT TO SPILL CONFIRM HEADLINING TOUR

BUILT TO SPILL CONFIRM HEADLINING TOUR

“HINDSIGHT” VIDEO, DIRECTED BY BOB ODENKIRK,
TO PREMIERE ON PITCHFORK.COM ON SEPTEMBER 1

Burbank, CA – Built to Spill, fresh off a tour with Kings Of Leon, have confirmed their own headlining tour in support of the current Warner Bros. Records album THERE IS NO ENEMY. Dates kick off this week in Omaha and conclude November 20th in Seattle. All dates are listed below.

Vocalist/guitarist Doug Martsch spent three and a half years writing the songs, which he recorded with bassist Brett Nelson, drummer Scott Plouf, and guitarists Jim Roth and Brett Netson. There Is No Enemy is the band’s first album since 2006’s You In Reverse. Previous studio albums include 2001’s Ancient Melodies of the Future, 1999’s Keep It Like A Secret, and their major-label debut, 1997’s Perfect From Now On. In 2010 Built to Spill still remain an influential force in compositionally intelligent, lyrically thoughtful, melodic, guitar-centric rock music:

“Built To Spill CEO Dough Martsch is alt-rock’s Thomas Pynchon, holed up in a remote studio and issuing immaculate artworks when he damn well pleases. Their components are all about simple, melodic beauty, writ large – prog rock for pop purists.” — Rolling Stone

“Boise’s answer to Crazy Horse…they still flourish.” — Spin

“Built To Spill has been leading the resurgence of indie-guitar rock virtuoso for 20 years now. Doug Martsch conducts an orchestra of feedback like a lightning god bringing the storm. As ever, Martsch proves capable of anthropomorphizing a bent string and imbuing it with more emotion than many bands’ vocals and lyrics.” — Alternative Press

“Subtly excellent an obviously influential. If you’re not excited about Built To spill in 2009, you’re living in the past.” — Magnet Magazine

“In addition to touring, the band recently filmed a video for the track “Hindsight” from THERE IS NO ENEMY in Los Angeles and directed by BTS friend and fan Bob Odenkirk, co-creator and co-star of HBO’s Mr. Show and currently starring in AMC’s Breaking Bad. Of everything he has directed, scenes for Mr. Show, pilots, feature films, shorts for the inter-web, Odenkirk is particularly proud of the “Hindsight” shortie because he loves the song so much AND he believes it is incontrovertible proof that time travel is possible with the right mix of music, emotion, and cleverly named gadgets.

Lauren Pritchard announces debut album Wasted In Jackson

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 07:41

“Wonderful, brooding, strung-out soul”
- The Sunday Times (London)

Wasted In Jackson, Lauren Pritchard’s Debut Album,
Set For October 26th Release By Universal Republic

Universal Republic will release Lauren Pritchard’s debut album, Wasted in Jackson, on October 26th. Pritchard, who starred in the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening, recorded the album with producer/Ivor Novello-winning songwriter Eg White (Duffy, Adele) in London, where early reviews have been phenomenal.

The Sunday Times of London praised the 22-year-old American’s “beautiful, soaring voice and…songs that roll and swell with Carole King and Norah Jones-like country-soul catchiness”while Elle (U.K.) said it’s “sure to have a place on the best of 2010 lists…mesmerizing” and the Daily Mail heralded her as “the next big thing.”

While currently based in London, Pritchard’s debut is clearly informed by her Southern upbringing – from the raspy, R&B-meet-gospel swagger of “Not the Drinking,” the album’s lead single, to the soulful title track, “Wasted in Jackson.”

Other highlights include “When The Night Kills The Day,” a haunting, bluesy shuffle featuring the eerie sound of an ancient piano belonging to Ed Harcourt (who co-wrote the song) and the elegant playing of hip young folk-slingers Mumford And Sons (whose frontman Marcus Mumford produced the song), the retro-soul stand-out “Stuck,” which garnered a “7″ from Pitchfork.com for its Various Production remix, and “Painkillers,” which masterfully maps a heartbreak with highway imagery. The latter, which features The Roots’ ?uestLove on drums, was Q Magazine’s “Track of the Day” and brought Roni Size out of a five year hiatus to do a remix of the track.

Raised in Jackson, Tennessee, Lauren moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music when she was only 16. She landed a gig playing keyboards and singing background vocals with a reggae band and performed in local theatrical productions to pay the bills. When she abruptly ran out of money and found herself near homeless, she was tempted to go home. But her friend Riley Keough and Riley’s mom, Lisa Marie Presley, insisted she stay with them and so Pritchard was able to keep pursing her musical muse and finish high school. By the time she graduated, she’d reached the final auditions for Spring Awakening, to be staged by the Atlantic, a repertory company founded by playwright David Mamet. Duncan Sheik, the show’s composer, cast her as Ilsa, a 15-year-old runaway, and she moved to New York. After two years in the Tony-winning Broadway musical, she left to focus on her own music.

Eg White, who was signed to the same publishing company as Pritchard, loved her cover of one of his songs and the two began collaborating in London. Lauren was signed to Universal by Darcus Beese, who also signed Amy Winehouse. She has since played the Glastonbury, Latitude and iTunes festivals and opened a UK tour for Florence and The Machine. Earlier this year, Paul Weller invited Lauren to perform with him at a BBC Radio 2 session. The two turned the Holland-Dozier-Holland classic “How Sweet It Is” into a breathtaking ballad that subsequently appeared as a B-side on Weller’s “Find The Torch/Burn The Plans” single. You can check out the performance

The track listing for Wasted In Jackson is as follows:

1. Stuck
2. Not The Drinking
3. Wasted In Jackson
4. Hope It’s You
5. Painkillers
6. No Way
7. Hanging Up
8. Going Home

The Drums Reveal “Down By The Water” Video, On Tour This Fall

The Drums

The Drums

“Down By The Water” Video

Co-Headlining North American Tour With Surfer Blood

“…all heart and hooks.”–The New York Times

“…totally addictive.”– NYLON

“A band to fall in love with” –NME

“one of the best indie pop debuts of the year.” – Rolling Stone

Riding a wave of international acclaim, The Drums are thrilled to share the new “Down By The Water” video which premiered earlier today on Stereogum. Check it out on Stereogum or here and feel free to post and share! Produced by Brian and Brad Palmer of SURROUND and The Drums the video reflects the band’s vision of elegant simplicity. “Both the video and song are a tribute to the girl groups of the 50′s and 60′s, a great inspiration to the band and one of the reasons we started it,” explains the band. A true departure from earlier singles the band slows the tempo showing their versatility with this new track.

Stacked against the summer’s dance-inducing releases, “Down By The Water” is a breath of fresh air. Paring the production down to a slow bass line, light percussion, and a distant synthesizer, the most pronounced instrument is Jonny Pierce’s voice, which opens softly and elevates to a sharp croon. The minimalist production however, does not negate the intensity of the lyrics. “Down By The Water” is a love song. “Everybody’s gotta love someone, but I just want to love you dear… you’ve got to believe me when I say the words forever,” pleads Pierce.

The Drums have been wowing European audiences for the better part of the last year, and now they’re bringing their electrifying live show to North America on a co-headlining tour with Surfer Blood! The band is currently in the midst of a massive worldwide tour and the North American dates are sure to be the most explosive yet! The album is out now digitally in the US and will be available in stores September 14th.

“Serious contenders for the title of Greatest Band in Britain” – NME

Burbank, CA – Breakthrough UK band biffy clyro will embark on their first US headlining tour, kicking off in Allston, MA on September 13. Their latest album, Only Revolutions, has been nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize. Prior shortlist nominees for the prestigious UK award include Florence and the Machine, Radiohead, and Franz Ferdinand. Only Revolutions will be released in the US on September 21. The album will be available at select indie record stores through Junketboy Distribution. Go to www.thinkindie.com (click on ThinkIndie Physical) for more information.

Produced by Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), mixed by Andy Wallace (Coldplay, Nirvana, Faith No More), and featuring the orchestration of multi Grammy-winning composer David Campbell, Only Revolutions is the fifth release from biffy clyro. The follow-up to 2007’s break through release Puzzle, Only Revolutions was released in the UK on November 9, 2009 to chart success and critical acclaim. It is certified platinum in the UK, and the Sunday Times, Kerrang and Q each gave it four stars, with The Guardian declaring, “ their songs pack a punch, but are full of light, shade and sophistication.” The first UK single off the album, “Mountains,” is a Top 5 radio hit that has sold over 100,000 copies. Current single “Bubbles,” (which features Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age playing additional guitar on the track) is the fifth consecutive single from Only Revolutions to enter the UK Top 40 chart.

The Scottish trio formed in 1995 and quickly began honing their unique sound, a mind-boggling mix of off-kilter tempos, itchy, unpredictable guitars, soulful choruses and feral screams. Years of relentless touring built a dedicated army of followers and turned biffy clyro into one of the most celebrated live bands in the UK– they’ve shared the stage with Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Linkin Park, opened a colossal Wembley Stadium show with Muse and became the first band ever to play in the Houses of Parliament. AVENGED SEVENFOLD’S “NIGHTMARE” IS NO. 1 AT ACTIVE ROCK RADIO, A FIRST FOR THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HARD ROCK BAND

EXPLOSIVE FIRST SINGLE IS TITLE TRACK TO BAND’S CHART-TOPPING FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM OUT NOW ON WARNER BROS. RECORDS

Burbank, CA – “Nightmare,” the current single from Southern California’s Avenged Sevenfold, has climbed to No. 1 at Active Rock Radio in the U.S. this week, marking the first time the band has achieved Number 1 in radio airplay. It has enjoyed airplay at Active Rock, Mainstream, and Modern Rock radio stations across the country and was the No. 1 Rock Song on iTunes in the U.S. and the U.K. in its debut week.

“Nightmare,” is the title track to the band’s highly personal new album, which bowed at No. 1 on Billboard’s album chart and also topped Billboard’s Rock, Hard Rock, and Digital charts. Its No. 1 debut is the band’s highest first-week chart position ever.

Produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and mixed by noted engineer Andy Wallace, Nightmare was in the works when the band’s beloved drummer, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, passed away. The Los Angeles Times has praised Nightmare’s “elegiac power ballads,” and called it “the band’s most personal effort yet.” USA Today declared, “A7X has as broad a musical palette as any act in metal, with soaring guitar melodies and sorrowful ballads that offset growling metalcore vocals and Metallica-like jackhammer rhythms.”

Avenged Sevenfold are currently out on the road co-headlining the first annual Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival with Disturbed. Also on the bill are Stone Sour, Halestorm, and Hell Yeah. Please visit www.RockstarUproar.com for tour dates.

Trentemøller Debuts “… Even Though You’re With Another Girl” Video, Releases Single

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 07:34

TRENTEMØLLER DEBUTS VIDEO FOR “…EVEN THOUGH YOU’RE WITH ANOTHER GIRL,” RELEASES SINGLE & REMIXES

Danish producer and multi-instrumentalist Trentemøller recently debuted the video for “…Even Though You’re With Another Girl,” the second single from his new album, Into The Great Wide Yonder. After the warm reaction to the long-player, Trentemøller also just released a single for this track, accompanied by a diverse set of remixes.

The video, premiered on Pitchfork and directed by Adam Hashemi, plays like a surreal short film. The story centers around a man uncomfortable bringing his girlfriend to meet his parents, avoiding eye contact throughout the affair. Suddenly, things take an unexpected turn, as the room fills with steam, and the man flies out the window. He drifts away into unknown territory, filled with burlesque dancers, faceless figures and a carpet stained blood-red.

The single itself is on an extremely limited 7”, with the original version chiming and drifting across the A side. Gracing the B side is Mikael Simpson’s remix, which simply allows pianos, strings and tape overdubs to bring out the beauty in Josephine Philip’s (Darkness Falls) vocal.

Alongside the single comes a 12” that features remixes by Kollektiv Turmstrasse and Pantha Du Prince. The Kollektiv’s half of the record slaps a heavy dose of deep, dark funk into this lo-slung version. Pantha Du Prince’s creates a remix based on his trademark twinkling melodies and warmly grooving understated beats, twisting and turning with dubbed out vocals.

F&M Release New Album This Fall

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 07:31

EDMONTON’S F&M
RELEASE SINCERELY, F&M
on NOVEMBER 12th

“F&M have just reminded us what finely crafted adult pop is all about
– not in the schmaltzy easy-listening radio sense, not in the big power
notes and diva personalities of mainstream contemporary music, but
in the thoughtful, emotional power of true musical storytelling.”
The Edmonton Journal

Toronto, ON – August 30, 2010 – In careful hands, silence can be as revelatory as the sharpest lyric and as significant as any note or beat in a song. Silence doesn’t often find itself a home in rock, pop, and folk, but over the course of their first two records, F&M gently courted it, and with the release of their third album, Sincerely, F&M, it has become part of the family.

Rebecca and Ryan Anderson, the songwriting couple at the heart of the Edmonton based band, transform silence into a versatile and eloquent instrument: it haunts the spaces between her sparkling piano lines and tugs at the edges of her accordion’s nostalgic wheeze; it charges the gaps in his guitar attacks with a crackling tension and animates the percussive skeleton and melodic flesh contributed by the rest of the band. It throws the interplay of their voices into high relief – Rebecca’s ringing with the delicate clarity of glass and lace; Ryan’s possessed by the spirits of rough wool and campfire smoke.

Those dynamics define the signature sound on Sincerely, F&M: a loping, spare orchestral folk stretched over a rock-pop backbone, waves of darkness and density crashing against brightness and space: music that’s reflective, emotive across a grand scale, and fearlessly hungry for meaning.

Sincerely, F&M began with a literal change of scenery, a palette-cleanser after the first two records, as the songwriters temporarily swapped the big Alberta sky for a seaside idyll of creation in Victoria, BC. Rebecca and Ryan’s ocean pilgrimage is enshrined in Sincerely, F&M, from the city’s name crowning the third track to the liner note wine pairings chosen by erstwhile bandmate/sommelier Brian Epp – a tribute to the couple’s songwriting lubricant of choice on the coast.

Back in Edmonton, they laboured in The Rhythm Egg studio to bring the album to life. Sincerely, F&M revisits the themes of the first two records and deepens the band’s explorations of the flickering contours of modern adulthood, with its moral reckonings and existential struggle. The songs are not simply about navigating joy and anguish, but also attention, contemplation, and devotion – an argument for substance and discovery, an overt rebellion against a billboard-and-sound bite world.

Stay tuned for tour dates this coming fall.
