NEW ALBUM, RIPOSTE, OUT SEPTEMBER 14th ON BRASSLAND. NORTH AMERICAN TOUR KICKS OFF SEPTEMBER 7th!
Brooklyn’s Buke and Gass are gearing up for an exciting tour with Danes Efterklang, but not before they pop into WNYC studios to perform on Soundcheck. They’re also releasing the track “Your Face Left Before You” off their upcoming debut full-length, Riposte, out Sept. 14th on Brassland. Already eliciting head-scratching/bobbing with their unorthodox instrumentation and sound, “Your Face Left Before You” will undoubtedly continue this trend with its gleeful and unabashed abuse of time signature, structure, and pulse.

EARLY PRAISE FOR BUKE AND GASS:
“Dig deeper into their infectious, uniquely real-time-looping sound via ‘Your Face Left Before You,’ another keeper from their Cruel Summer-sampled Brassland debut.” – Brandon Stosuy, Stereogum
“Buke and Gass, a quirky indie-rock duo . . . [merged] homespun tools and technological savvy.” — Steve Smith, The New York Times
“So named for its self-built hybrid instruments, the guy-girl duo makes a jagged yet infectious racket” – Hank Shteamer, Time Out New York
“Brooklyn duo Buke & Gass play homemade Frankenstein instruments that make beautiful and wild sproinging sounds . . . But their Brassland Records debut, Riposte (due Sept 14) isn’t some steampunk novelty–it’s a unique, euphoric, distorto-f**ked rock banger, a jarring, Geraldine Fibbers-style alt-chug given a fancy new lilt by erratic prog and African circular rhythms.” – Christopher Weingarten, VillageVoice.com

STARFUCKER SIGNS TO POLYVINYL, PLANS TOUR WITH THE OCTOPUS PROJECT AND RELEASES “JULIUS” SINGLE
Download First Single “Julius” Here
Portland, OR-based quartet Starfucker is excited to announce they have signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. Having found a new label to call home, the band will head out on a fall tour with Austin-based band The Octopus Project. The band will also release an alternate single version of their track “Julius” (mp3 download here, available for posting) with the B-side “Helium Muffin” as a first single on Polyvinyl (7″ out Oct 12 – first 500 limited edition blue vinyl. Digital out Sept 14th.), which will be off their upcoming full-length, planned for an early 2011 release. Pre-order for the single is available here.
A darker and more groove oriented track than anything the band has recorded to date, “Julius” was initially recorded in Hodges’ bedroom before the band entered the Odditorium (the studio established by The Dandy Warhols) to add flourishes and finishing touches with producer Jacob Portrait (Mint Chicks, The Dandy Warhols).
Led by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Hodges, the band has received almost as much attention for its immensely accessible dance hooks than for its not-always-accessible moniker. As Hodges admits, “I like, and have always liked, the idea of seeing what we could do with a stupid name like Starfucker.”
Yet, despite selling out shows from coast to coast behind its critically acclaimed self-titled debut album and follow-up EP Jupiter, the members of Starfucker were constantly being told that their name was holding them back from bigger and better things. And so, at the insistence of those around them, the group invited fans to send in suggestions for a new name before finally settling on Pyramiddd. The change was short-lived.
Explains bassist Shawn Glassford, “That was definitely the low point for the band, but we wised up and took the power back. We’re doing things our way again without anyone trying to pull our strings.”
At this point, it certainly feels like nothing can hold Starfucker back — least of all its name.

Having found huge success with their last album, P-Thugg and Dave 1, otherwise known as Chromeo are back to Business as Casual. The duo have been touring and furthering their next album’s buzz off of the strength of the hit singles “Night By Night” and “Don’t Turn The Lights On.” Their internet buzz is quite powerful at the moment as most streaming sites feature the songs.
MVRemix: What made you decide to record the majority of “Business Casual” in Brooklyn, New York as opposed to in Montreal?
P-Thugg: We actually started [recording] in Montreal. All the demos and pre-production was completed in Montreal, then probably the second half in New York just for logistics because Dave is going to school over there. He’s taking a couple things, so we could actually be in the same city.
Dave 1: Everyday.
P-Thugg: So that we could physically go to the same studio everyday and work. There’s a good part of the work that we can do from a distance but there comes a point where we have to get together and record stuff.
MVRemix: How long did it take you to record “Business Casual” as a whole record?
Dave 1: It’s tough to quantify because I mean we were writing demos all the time, we were writing songs all the time. There’s little demos that were like three years old, two years old… But in terms of gathering all the ideas and recording all of it, I would say a good year/year and a half.
P-Thugg: On and off.
Dave 1: On and off, yeah.
MVRemix: What inspired the title?
Dave 1: [smirking] I made a reservation at a bit of a “dubious” restaurant. It was a tacky spot, I was embarrassed. And on the answering machine it said. “Dress code is business casual.” I thought it just had an 80′s resonance to it, you know? A yuppie meets Don Johnson, meets Huey Lewis thing. I told P[Thugg] that could be a funny title for the album and we liked it, but we thought it might have been too jokey. Then it just stayed in the back burner. We couldn’t think of a better title, and at one point my brother (DJ A-Trak) shot me a text saying, “You know what? I think you should keep Business Casual” and so we kept it. I’m really happy actually we’ve gotten great feedback.
MVRemix: From the recording process, how many songs would you say you recorded in total, and how many did you throw away?
Dave 1: None.
MVRemix: Not necessarily threw away, but how many were recorded for it that didn’t make it?
Dave 1: None.
P-Thugg: The selection process is pretty intense. So if we choose a song we know right away from a demo if we sing to each other, we know if it’s gonna turn into something or not.
Dave 1: There’s dozens and dozens of demos.
P-Thugg: There’s a lot of demos and a lot of ideas.
Dave 1: But in terms of what we choose to make an actual song out of, like what P [Thugg] said, when we’re going down that road, there’s no turning back. It’s gonna make it on the album.
MVRemix: Now I know there’s a French ballad on the album, will you be doing more music in French or was it that your main crowd is English and so you record the occasional French song?
Dave 1: We’ll do stuff in French if there’s more ideas in French. We don’t have anything against it, but we’ve never had a good French song idea. Now [with] that song it was fairly convincing, and it was fun to do so if there’s more, we’ll do more.
MVRemix: What would you say is the biggest misconception people have of Chromeo?
P-Thugg: [pondering] Well there was in the past this misconception that we were not serious and that we were ironic with music.
Dave 1: Definitely the irony part.
P-Thugg: I think that’s fading out with longevity with us keeping doing what we’re doing it’s running out. Other misconceptions… That we…
Dave 1: [interupting] That it’s me dancing in the “Night By Night” video. That’s the biggest misconception.
MVRemix: Yeah, I’d read that it was a stunt double…
Dave 1: Yeah, sadly yes. Ladies, I’m sorry. I have other talents; I make a mean scrambled egg.
MVRemix Camera Woman: Make a mean omelette.
Dave 1: She fell for it.
MVRemix Camera Woman:No? Not really. Not a good cook?
Dave 1: Me? Lousy, but my scrambled eggs are great. It’s a start.
MVRemix Camera Woman: That’s great, at least you can do that.
Dave 1: See, easy.
Interview conducted by Hugo Lunny, photographed by Natasha Davidson
MVRemix: So with regards to the situation with Chromeo on the internet, I don’t know if you’re familiar with the new Canadian laws that have been passed with huge fines being introduced. So if you have any illegal copy you can be penalized, where do you stand because your music is so widespread?
Dave 1: I don’t care if they bootleg our music. Let them get it as long as they like it, we really don’t care. It’s so obsolete to think in those terms. The reality is, you’ve got to let the technology dictate how you market and consume music instead of having this repressive or oppressive approach where you’re like, “You can’t do this, because… no!” First of all downloading music is on it’s way out, it’s only gonna be streaming music. You’ve heard of Spotify? (A cloud server for music) Record companies are trying to block Spotify in North America. I’m sure that’s gonna end up happening or something that’s equivalent to it. Then you don’t even have music on your computer, it’s all up in a cloud somewhere. You can listen to anything you want at any time. So I think the businesses just have to adapt to what consumers are doing. So personally we don’t care.
P-Thugg: Quite frankly at a certain level it benefits the bands more than harming them.
Dave 1: I’ll say this, if our album leaks before street date, we’ll be really upset. That’s gonna suck because that just sabotages the momentum that we’re trying to build to get excitement around one event and awareness around one event. If the record leaks then it just ruins everything. So that’d be really upsetting, but after the album’s out if some people wanna buy it, then you buy the record. If it “fell off a truck” and landed into your hard drive, come see us at a show. Buy a t-shirt…
P-Thugg: Half of the bands that blew up today it’s because people had access to their music.
Dave 1: But again, paradoxically, if it happens before the actual release date it would suck. It’s not exactly about losing sales, it’s about losing this momentum that we’ve been building for months.
MVRemix: A la “Fight Club,” “If you could fight any celebrity, who would you fight?”
Dave 1: [smirking] Oh that’s mean.
MVRemix: As a joke… who annoys you in the media?
Dave 1: Stephen Harper, that’s it.
MVRemix: Would you win?
Dave 1: Who knows? He’d probably show up with the rifle he borrowed from Sarah Palin.
P-Thugg: I’m backing Dave up.
Dave 1: Fight the power! Literally, right?
MVRemix: I know that you’ve been saying Business Casual is quite like “Mamma’s Boy” in terms of the sound.
Dave 1: Yeah, but it’s also like “Night By Night,” there’s a lot of fun in there too.
MVRemix: The question around that was you know that MGMT had a very different follow up to their last album.
Dave 1: I actually really like their new album by the way. I really liked it.
MVRemix: Same here, but a lot of people were so so on it…
Dave 1: We didn’t do that. That was actually… We’re not gonna do that. I mean you heard “Night By Night”? Did you hear “Don’t Turn The Lights On”?
MVRemix: Oh yeah.
Dave 1: It’s not that different… It’s a little smoother and more textured..
P-Thugg: There’s no change, it’s just we concentrated on a couple of different branches from Fancy Footwork and it’s conceptual.
Dave 1: We’re not losing anyone. I really respect what MGMT did because it’s bold and I think with their status they can afford to do that. It’s a bold gesture and actually the new album is dope, I really like it. But with us, in a way, we were a little bit more conservative that we just tried to find the middle ground between giving our audience something new and also something that they expect from the brand that we’ve built.
P-Thugg: And also feel that we’re not stagnated. That we’re actually have a bit of an evolution in music.
Dave 1: That’s important.
MVRemix: There’s something that has become expected in live shows. With regards to the encore, rarely have I seen a point where it’s not planned.
Dave 1: The Strokes don’t do an encore.
MVRemix: Really?
Dave 1: Traditionally they never did an encore.
MVRemix: I’d like to see them. But regardless of the crowd’s reception, there’s always an encore…
Dave 1: And we’re suckers for that too. I mean we have a whole stage where we’re like, [sarcastically] “We’re walking out now!” “Oh my god, they’re singing the Chromeo chant,” “Here we are, we’re back!” To be honest with you, I don’t see encores as a real gauge of how the concert is going. I like encores because bands use encores to perform another type of song. I mean, look at for instance The XX. I’m sure you’ve seen them, they do that wonderful cover of Womack & Womack “Teardrops” as an encore song. Vampire Weekend did Fleetwood Mac “Everywhere” as an encore song. I like the encore because it just switches the mood of the show. So what we do in our encore is… It’s bogus, but whatever… Is we actually have our ballad segment because the energy from the show is down, we’ve gotten Fancy Footwork out of the way, Bonafied [Lovin']‘s out of the way. So we come out, P [Thugg] does “Mamma’s Boy,” and it just becomes another atmosphere, another ambience. It’s more of a sing along slow jam hour. So we do that, sometimes we do an Eagles cover. We do “100%” which is a nice, feel good song. We use it more as a platform to switch up the mood of the show.
MVRemix: Speaking of your show, you’ve been touring a lot over the past couple of years. Are there any songs that you’d like to say, “Well I like this a lot, but maybe I could leave this song for a year.”
Dave 1: Yeah.
P-Thugg: Yeah. We just did that on this tour.
Dave 1: But I think we should change it, I don’t know.
P-Thugg: It’s a constant battle, because some cities love “this” song and you’re like “It’s in the set forever” and you wanna change the set, then you’re like “Actually most of the cities don’t really care much.”
Dave 1: It’s also the pacing, you’ve got to go one known song, one lesser favourite… It’s kind of like manipulating people’s emotions but you never really know how it’s gonna work. It’s very speculative as well.
MVRemix: Any last words for your fans?
Dave 1: Don’t turn the lights on.

“Rather like the Beautiful South, Unicycle Loves You takes conventional sounding pop forms and puts clever, darker spin on them, subverting what you might mistake on first hearing for a classic AM radio tune.” – PopMatters
Don’t be fooled by Unicycle Loves You’s bright, surf-rocking title track, Mirror, Mirror, off their sophomore release on Highwheel Records (September 7th). Taking a dark and twisted (but delightful) turn in this new video directed by Anthony Dixon and Unicycle Loves You’s Jim Carroll, it harkens on classic horror and sci-fi films offering tales of unusual love. Feel free to post and share their “candy-coated darkness”, which premiered on PopMatters.
Catch the mesmerizing Unicycle Loves You, who Time Out Chicago describes as “just one high-profile review away from the adulation it deserves,” as they find themselves on tour throughout the Midwest and East coast. The tour includes dates with Ha Ha Tonka, the Royal Bangs and Weezer- just in time for Weezer’s Blue Album/Pinkerton tour. For the full schedule, please see below.

Christmas in November: Made Out of Babies singer Julie Christmas announces solo debut
“Metal’s most riveting frontwoman…a smart, eccentric post-kid just becoming aware of the unearthly power she wields.” — Decibel Magazine
“Julie Christmas sings, screams, snarls and sobs her heart out with terrifying naked abandon.” — Revolver
Brooklyn singer Julie Christmas has announced the upcoming release of her first solo record, The Bad Wife, this fall. Often celebrated for her intense vocal acrobatics in heavy-hitting bands like Made Out of Babies, Battle of Mice and the supergroup Spylacopa (featuring members of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Candiria and Isis), Christmas’ solo debut finds her pushing the range of her already iconoclastic genre-melding work. Ahead of the album’s release, the song “July 31st” is featured on the soundtrack for the Paramount movie, Wrong Turn at Tahoe, starring Harvey Keitel and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Of late, Christmas has been busy expanding her repertoire. She is currently is collaborating with Nix Turner, renowned illustrator of worldwide counterculture icon, Emily the Strange, to create a book titled The Scribbles and Scrapes of Amy Anyone: (A Multiple Personality Autobiography). Christmas wrote the story and is working on music for the release of an accompanying CD, featuring a tone signaling the reader to turn the page.
In addition, the singer recently worked on the soundtrack for a French indie film “Le Debut,” in which a young couple resorts to infanticide when faced with the challenges of poverty, depression and parenthood. “I use sounds to express feelings and ideas that I am too clumsy to get across with words alone,” the singer explains. “Working with amazing visual artists – people who speak in images – gets me one step closer to really communicating with anyone nuts enough to listen.”
Christmas’s band, Made Out of Babies, is currently writing their fourth full-length album, scheduled to be released in the spring of 2011. Live shows and exhibitions with visual artists are being arranged. A video to promote the album is in production.
The Bad Wife will be available on CD/LP and digital download via Rising Pulse Records on November 9th, 2010.

The Sword Unveil Video for “Tres Brujas” And Release Warp Riders Today
It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for! Warp Riders, the highly anticipated 3rd album by Austin, TX’s THE SWORD hits stores today via Kemado Records.
MySpace Music has the exclusive video premiere of the album’s first single, “Tres Brujas.” To make the video, THE SWORD headed into the hot California desert with Artificial Army and filmed the first video of their Post-Apocalyptic Western Trilogy that ties in themes of Warp Riders over the course of three videos – “Tres Brujas,” “Lawless Lands,” and “Night City.” It’s Seven Samurai crossed with The Magnificent Seven meets Mad Max filtered through the imagination of THE SWORD.
Warp Riders is amassing fantastic acclaim from fans and critics alike. Rolling Stone raves, “The Sword make metal so pure – so precise, so shredding, so full of doom – there’s something almost hyper-real about it.” Hard Rock magazine Revolver added, “doom, chugging thrash, and ruminating psychedelia… The intriguing sci-fi storyline that unites these 10 tracks is an added bonus.” And AltSounds.com said of the album’s first single, “’Tres Brujas’ is an instant, head banging retro metal classic.”
THE SWORD will hit the road, touring the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe this fall, including an opening spot for metal gods Metallica during the Australia, New Zealand, and Japanese legs. Visit the band’s website for more ticket information.

Toronto’s Bonjay Release Broughtupsy on October 5th Brand New Single “Stumble” Available Now
Sometimes the most unlikely pairings make for the most interesting outcomes. This could not be truer in the case of Toronto’s Bonjay. The duo will release their Broughtupsy mini-album in October. The preview track, “Stumble” is a perfect introduction to the world of Bonjay with its chopped up sirens, irresistible beat, and a voice from singer Alanna Stuart that is as commanding as it is seductive. Ignite your media players now! http://bonjay.net/media_preview/Bonjay-Stumble.mp3
Composed of Stuart and producer Ian “Pho” Swain, Bonjay were recently named by CBC as “one of the top 10 Canadian bands destined to break in 2010.” Since teaming up in 2006, Bonjay has developed a sound all their own that mixes dancehall reggae innovation, indie sentiments, electronic elements, and a DIY soul – a sound made in Toronto. The duo first released the mixtape, Bangarang Business to locals only in 2007. A bass-heavy cover of TV on the Radio’s “Staring at the Sun” was the opening track and it garnered serious blog attention for Bonjay all over.
After turning up the volume in clubs across Canada, Bonjay recorded the Gimmee Gimmee EP. The title track showcases Alanna’s West Indian heritage in the form of a freestyle that closes the song in Gypsy patois. It quickly became an online sensation.
After the success of Bangarang Business and Gimmee Gimmee, Bonjay decided to make a proper mini-album of all original material. Broughtupsy never sacrifices the fun despite its intelligence. The album is full of experimentation (both musical and vocal), transfixing melodies, and beats that defy classification but are sure to invade headphones and speakers worldwide.
Bonjay are quickly becoming known for their live performances. With Alanna’s commanding presence and Pho performing the beats and effects live, they are truly a high-energy sound system of bass and soul, extending the dancehall template to something more like a live band. Bonjay draws their name from island slang meaning “Good God!” That’s most likely the reaction you’ll have too.
Bonjay Upcoming Tour Dates (more to be announced!)
Thu Sept 30 – Pop Montreal Festival, Jupiter Room
Thu Oct 07 – Toronto CD Release, The Garrison
The Rural Alberta Advantage tour Western Canada, record new album.
Toronto – The Rural Albera Advantage will be embarking on a nine-date tour of Canada’s West Coast (dates below) that will have them spending some extra time especially in the province that inspired their wildly successful debut album, Hometowns. The tour comes on the tail-end of a summer of heavy recording for the band. Nils, Amy and Paul have been hard at work over the summer with producer Roger Leavens (Woodhands) at Boombox Sound in Toronto on their as-yet-untitled follow-up album slated for a Canadian release in early 2011 on Paper Bag Records. Check out some photos of the band from the studio below.
The inspiring DIY success story of the Rural Alberta Advantage continues to gain momentum, mainly due to the band’s extensive time spent touring and getting the ultimate seal of approval from Pitchfork (“This band could be huge”) and a “breaking out” feature artist in Spin Magazine. More glowing press reviews and sold-out club dates in major cities throughout the United States and Canada have followed, and the trio now find themselves signed to indie giant Saddle Creek Records (Bright Eyes). Hometowns was properly released on Saddle Creek in July 2009, and stellar reviews from influential critics and new fans alike are securing the album’s place on many 2009 “best-of” lists including Pitchfork, iTunes Canada, Spin Magazine and NME.
The RAA spent the past winter on the road, hitting a sold out headlining tour across Canada, a performance at the Vancouver Olympics, a relentless schedule of 11 shows over the four days of SXSW in Austin, and recently returned from their first European tour. The Rural Alberta Advantage capped off the spring with the honour of winning this year’s Galaxie Rising Star Award at Canadian Music Week. Not much for taking a break, the band showcased some new songs with key sets at this summer’s Ottawa Bluesfest and Winnipeg Folk Festival.

ROSANNE CASH’S MEMOIR, COMPOSED, WILL DEBUT ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER LIST
Composed, the newly published memoir from acclaimed singer and songwriter Rosanne Cash, will debut on The New York Times Book Review hardcover, nonfiction bestseller list at No. 20 on August 29th. In the book Cash shares her recollections growing up as Johnny Cash’s eldest daughter and coming into her own as a performer, daughter, and mother.
Called “one of the best accounts of an American life you’ll likely ever read” by the Chicago Tribune and “wise, honest, and utterly engaging” by the Washington Post, Composed (published by Viking; $26.95) has earned rave reviews from media outlets across the country, including Entertainment Weekly, the Boston Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Daily Beast, the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, as well as starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly. It also received early praise from Cash’s fellow authors Bill Flanagan (Evening’s Empire), Daniel J. Levitin (This Is Your Brain on Music), and Adriana Trigiani (best-selling author of the Big Stone Gap series and Brava, Valentine), who calls it “a lush and glorious memoir that is wise and knowing, humorous and full of hope.”
The week Composed was released, Cash was interviewed on PBS’ NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and NPR’s “The Diane Rehm Show.” She also sat down with ABC’s Good Morning America and performed a song from her first-ever covers album, The List, which was released in October 2009. The appearance attracted renewed attention for the critically heralded album, sending The List to No. 1 on Amazon’s Top Country Albums chart. The album also jumped from No. 68 to No. 28 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, entered the Amazon Best Sellers chart at No. 9, and rose to No. 13 on the iTunes Top Country Albums chart.
Over the course of her career, Cash has recorded fourteen albums, including 1981’s gold Seven Year Ache and 1987’s gold King’s Record Shop, and charted 21 Top 40 country singles, 11 of which climbed to No. 1. She has received ten Grammy Award nominations — winning in 1985 — and was nominated last December for “Sea of Heartbreak,” a duet with Bruce Springsteen on The List, which is eligible for Grammy consideration this year. The album, which Vanity Fair called “superb,” debuted in the Top 5 on the Country Chart, and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 22. The List has been nominated for “Album of the Year” by The Americana Music Association, which will announce the 2010 winners in a ceremony held September 9th at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Cash will attend and perform at the event.
Cash is also the author of Bodies of Water and the children’s book Penelope Jane: A Fairy’s Tale. Her essays and fiction have been published in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and New York magazine.
