Alain Johannes Gets New Release Date For Solo Debut, Spark Album to be Released October 5th on Joshua Homme’ Rekords Rekords

Click HERE to Download “Endless Eyes” MP3

Fresh off his latest run of shows playing guitar for Them Crooked Vultures, and currently on a tour of Europe to include appearances at Reading and Leeds festivals, Alain Johannes is getting ready to release his solo debut, Spark (Rekords Rekords/ Ipecac Recordings), which has the new release date of October 5th. With a resume that includes co-founding the band Elevenand collaborations with Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell, Mark Lanegan, and Spinnerette (Brody Dalle’s latest project) among numerous others, Alain Johannes has already established himself as a gifted and prolific musical talent. However, Sparkis where Johannes’ strengths as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist are finally showcased all at once.

Queens of the Stone Age/Them Crooked Vultures frontman Joshua Homme, whose label Rekords Rekords will co-release Spark with Ipecac Recordings, says: “Alain’s record is the total embodiment of what the label stands for—the war against endorsing mediocrity and the uncensored attempt to take a leap off the musical cliff. Spark is a stunning examination of figuring out what you do when someone’s gone, and it’s utterly breathtaking.”

Spark opens with “Endless Eyes,” a beautiful flurry of cigar box guitars churning out layers of highly rhythmic riffs. Johannes’ soulful vocals soar on top, creating a mystical, eastern-flavored sound. The track is an ode to Natasha Shneider, Johannes’ late wife and creative partner. After she passed away in 2008, Queens of the Stone Age organized an all-star benefit show in Los Angeles to celebrate Shneider’s life. Johannes composed “Endless Eyes” specifically for the show, and the song ended up settling the wheels in motion for what would become Spark.

From beginning to end, the album showcases the remarkable technical precision and versatility that has made Johannes such an in-demand guitar player. Spark also reveals him to be far more than a rock guitarist, with elements of classical, flamenco, and Indian music displayed throughout. Tying it all together is his ability to craft melodies ripe with nuance, which is what truly makes each of the eight tracks captivating and emotionally resonant.

MIIKE SNOW ANNOUNCE FALL AMERICAN TOUR

SWEDISH/AMERICAN TRIO CONTINUES WINNING STREAK AT SOME OF NORTH AMERICA’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS VENUES

Touring in continued support of their breakout debut, Miike Snow are returning to America to regale stateside audiences with their dance-pop compositions and unparalleled live show. The group, comprised of Swedish producers Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg and New York-dwelling vocalist/songwriter Andrew Wyatt, plan to further extend the tremendous momentum they have carried through their European and South American dates earlier this summer.

Since the release of their self-titled LP in late 2008, Miike Snow have ridden a wave of critical popularity to features on national television programs (including 2 performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and sold-out shows the world over. This leg of performances will likely prove to do the same, ignited by an already sold-out performance at New York’s Terminal 5 and punctuated by a headlining slot at the Treasure Island Festival.

“…gorgeous, hook-filled framework devised by producers Bloodshy & Avant and singer Andrew Wyatt amounts to the year’s finest example of pop irony.” -SPIN, #35 of 40 Best Albums of 2009

Matt & Kim New Single “Cameras” Out Digitally August 31

Fri, 08/20/2010 - 00:06

MATT AND KIM REVEAL DETAILS FOR NEW SINGLE “CAMERAS” OUT DIGITALLY AUGUST 31ST ON FADER LABEL

On August 31st, Matt and Kim will release “Cameras”, the first single off their upcoming third full-length album, out this fall via FADER Label. Recorded in Atlanta, GA with producer Ben Allen, “Cameras” will be Matt and Kim’s first new original music since the release of their critically acclaimed sophomore album Grand.

The release of the new single follows their recent show at this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. From the moment they appeared on the Adidas MEGA stage at sunset to the end of their hour-long set, Matt and Kim delivered their trademark stamp: a jaw-dropping, down, dirty, ass shaking performance. MTV News described it as being in front of a “huge group of people who were hanging on their every keyboard pound and drum slap.” and Billboard proclaimed Matt and Kim’s set was “the happiest hour of the day.”

Tera Melos announce headlining tour dates in US and Japan Forthcoming album Patagonian Rats out in September

Thu, 08/19/2010 - 19:43

Tera Melos announce headlining tour dates in US and Japan Forthcoming album Patagonian Rats out in September

Long-running Sacramento genre-benders Tera Melos have announced headlining tour dates in the US and Japan in support of the trio’s forthcoming full-length, Patagonian Rats. The Japanese tour includes dates with Mike Watt and the Missing Men. Please see full dates listed below.

The first video for the song “The Skin Surf” — directed by Behn Fannin (The Melvins, Nurses) — shows the band at its quirky, clever finest.

Have Tera Melos gone pop? Well, no….but yes. Much like the band’s intricate and complex song structures, it’s not quite that simple. Tera Melos’ songs have traditionally been densely packed with so many wild shifts of time signature and chord structures that guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Nick Reinhart jokes they were sounds that, “only wizards could decipher.”

Patagonian Rats is packed with melodic hooks and jabs that on paper might seem to defy the band’s experimental edge. There’s even clear and distinct vocals throughout — a first for the band, where vocals, if any, were previously awash with distortion and layered in the mix. But, particulars aside, Patagonian Rats is the type of album that sticks with you.

Occasionally, “pop” music has really meant daring music. Like the Beach Boys in the late 60s, The Clash in the 70s, Devo in the 80s, Flaming Lips in the 90s — the greatest artists have dared to make music that is hooky while also being groundbreaking. Patagonian Rats evokes images of bizarre and fantastic alternate realities. Think about the first time you heard “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys; jarring collisions of a cappella harmonies, tremolo-washed bass and chirping theremin. The key is not to understand it, but to let the music transform everyday reality into something new. And, that is the essence of Patagonian Rats.

Tera Melos formed in 2004 as a quartet, releasing their first self-titled disc in 2005 (later re-released by Sargent House in 2008). The band became a trio in late 2006, releasing the all-instrumental Drugs to the Dear Youth EP early the following year. A split disc with By The End of Tonight (2007) on Temporary Residence and an EP of cover songs, Idioms, Vol 1 followed in 2009. In the meantime, Reinhart collaborated with prolific drummer Zach Hill under the band name bygones, releasing the by- album in 2009 and Spiritual Bankruptcy EP in 2010, both on Sargent House. Clardy has also recently spent downtime as the touring drummer with guitar goddess Marnie Stern.

Patagonian Rats will be available everywhere via Sargent House on September 7th, 2010.

Seeland Announce New Album “How To Live” and Release First Single

SEELAND ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM HOW TO LIVE AND RELEASE FIRST SINGLE “LOCAL PARK”

UK trio Seeland are excited to announce their second album How to Live, out October 26 on LOAF Recordings. The band has released “Local Park” (available for posting), the first single off of their sophomore effort. They are also offering a full album stream in exchange for an email address via an embeddable widget (embed code below).

“Local Park”, a gorgeous summer stroll of a tune, celebrates the Great British (and, frankly, universal) tradition of heading straight for the closest patch of grass as soon as the sun appears, in order to soak up the precious rays so rarely seen on their often grey isle. Instantly familiar in the tradition of The Kinks or The Small Faces and yet decidedly ‘other’ in it’s musical vision, “Local Park” is as uplifting as the sun and optimistic as summer itself, the audio equivalent of strawberries and cream.

Moving away from the heavy drum machine dominated sound of their debut, How To Live is an altogether creamier confection. There are still chugging Neu grooves and soft focus psychedelic electronics, but the sound is now more all encompassing, more organic, like slipping into a hot tub with a glass of homemade lemonade. Recorded using a wide variety of vintage synths and old analogue equipment, each sound has been painstakingly passed through numerous pre-amps and filters to create what can only be described as the Seeland sound.

Seeland are Timothy Felton, Billy Bainbridge and Neil McAuley, sonic pioneers associated with Birmingham’s ‘Retro Futurist Electronic Scene’. The band was formed when Tim and Billy left their respective bands (Broadcast and Plone) and started writing songs together that could express the sounds of their minds.

BLUE NOTE RECORDS TO RELEASE “…FEATURING ” ON NOV. 2, A STAR-STUDDED COLLECTION OF NORAH JONES’S MUSICAL COLLABORATIONS

BLUE NOTE RECORDS TO RELEASE “…FEATURING ” ON NOV. 2, A STAR-STUDDED COLLECTION OF NORAH JONES’S MUSICAL COLLABORATIONS

On November 2, EMI’s Blue Note Records will release …Featuring, a star-studded collection of the multi-platinum selling, multi-Grammy Award winning singer Norah Jones’s musical collaborations from the past decade. The 18 songs on the album include duets with such legends as Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton, and with 21st Century icons from OutKast to the Foo Fighters.

“It’s so exciting and flattering and fun when I get asked to sing with somebody that I admire,” says Jones. “It takes you a little bit out of your comfort zone when you’re doing something with another artist. You don’t know what to expect—it’s kind of like being a little kid and having a playdate.”

The tracks on …Featuring span her entire career, from one of her earliest recording sessions (a version of Roxy Music’s “More Than This” with guitarist Charlie Hunter in 2001) to her most recent performance, a song called “Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John” that she cut with Belle and Sebastian, which will also appear on their new album. The result serves as a kind of parallel history to her own four albums, which have sold over 40 million copies worldwide.

These collaborations reveal Jones’s astonishing musical versatility, from jazz to country, hip-hop to rock. Three of the songs on …Featuring originally appeared on records that won Grammy awards for Album of the Year (Ray Charles’ Genius Loves Company, Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters, and OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below), and several others were also nominated for Grammys.

The album also includes recordings by some of Jones’s own bands and side projects (The Little Willies and El Madmo), and performances with artists that she’s toured with including M. Ward, Sasha Dobson, and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Songs on …Featuring range from classics recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, and Roy Orbison to new material by such wide-ranging innovators as Ryan Adams and Q-Tip.

“A lot of the people on this record are people I’ve worshiped since I was a kid, and some of them are younger and more my contemporaries,” says Jones. “Even though the musicians are so varied, the vibe of the songs makes sense when we put them all together.”

The track listing for …Featuring is as follows:

1. Love Me – The Little Willies
2. Virginia Moon – The Foo Fighters featuring Norah Jones
3. Turn Them – Sean Bones featuring Norah Jones
4. Baby It’s Cold Outside – Willie Nelson featuring Norah Jones
5. Bull Rider – Norah Jones and Sasha Dobson
6. Ruler Of My Heart – Dirty Dozen Brass Band featuring Norah Jones
7. The Best Part – El Madmo
8. Take Off Your Cool – OutKast featuring Norah Jones
9. Life Is Better – Q-Tip featuring Norah Jones
10. Soon The New Day – Talib Kweli featuring Norah Jones
11. Little Lou, Prophet Jack, Ugly John – Belle & Sebastian featuring Norah Jones
12. Here We Go Again – Ray Charles featuring Norah Jones
13. Loretta – Norah Jones featuring Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
14. Dear John – Ryan Adams featuring Norah Jones
15. Creepin’ In – Norah Jones featuring Dolly Parton
16. Court & Spark – Herbie Hancock featuring Norah Jones
17. More Than This – Charlie Hunter featuring Norah Jones
18. Blue Bayou – Norah Jones featuring M. Ward

INDIE FOLK ROCK ALBUM OF MYSTICAL HASIDIC MUSIC AGED IN THE BARRELS OF EASTERN EUROPEAN FOLKLORE

Thu, 08/19/2010 - 18:58

INDIE FOLK ROCK ALBUM OF MYSTICAL HASIDIC MUSIC AGED IN THE BARRELS OF EASTERN EUROPEAN FOLKLORE

Darkcho is an album of mystical Hasidic music, that sounds more like an indie folk rock album with tradition than what you would expect of a religious album. The music is very real, very meditative and very very human. A physical copy of this record is hard to find. As we look at the art we see how mysterious it all is. Hand written lyrics and notes cover the panels, but there is no label, there is no website, there is no way of finding out any more information and to top it all off, when you flip the cover over you read these fascinating words:

“These songs collected here belong to the Jewish people. They originate from holiness. They speak of self nullification and redemption, the need for healing and discovering the depths of the Holy One Blessed Be He in this world and the next.

We take no recognition for any part of the material, lest the actual performing of the music itself.

The recognition was meant for the Holy One Blessed Be He and to the nation that lives by His word.”

Shemspeed has taken on this beautiful record in order to ensure that the world hears it, aged in the barrels of Eastern European folklore and steeped in centuries of Jewish musical tradition. The album plays like a Tarantino soundtrack to the deepest, most spiritual moments of life; full of depth and style, antiquity and freshness.

THE DUBBER COUNTS DOWN TO THE WORLDWIDE RELEASE OF HIS DEBUT ALBUM ‘GLOBAL WARMING’

THE Dubber is confidently delivering to music lovers everywhere an eclectic fusion of genres in his debut album, GLOBAL WARNING. With over two decades of expertise in the music industry, ranging from playing with various rock groups in Los Angeles to the live scene of his now native South Carolina and stages at the SXSW festival, THE Dubber is over-proficient in his craft.

Global Warning embraces sounds from a vast musical catalog. Rock, reggae, Hip-Hop and blues have all played a part in the musical make up of THE Dubber. This melodic love affair allows his distinct sound to transcend boundaries and put him at the head of a long line of aspiring artists eager to relay their message to the world.

The lead off single from GLOBAL WARNING is the acoustic driven With a Feeling.
