THE OCTOPUS PROJECT ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF HEXADECAGON ON PEEK-A-BOO RECORDS
In recent years of intensive touring, long drives from venue to venue soundtracked by minimal composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich led Austin-based group The Octopus Project to think about expanding the scope of their own endeavors. Already known for concise blasts of experimental pop and energetic stage shows, the band wished to create a more enveloping experience. That notion evolved into Hexadecagon, debuted as a live performance and soon to be released in album form October 26, 2010 on Peek-A-Boo Records.
In order to achieve their creative vision, Josh and Yvonne Lambert, Toto Miranda, and Ryan Figg decided they needed more than stereo audio and a single projection. Using custom electronics (The Bend Matrix) and pushing existing software (Ableton Live, VDMX, OSCulator) to its limits, they arranged eight speakers in a circle around the audience, with the audience surrounding the band at the center, accompanied by eight synchronized video projections, designed by Austin digital artist Wiley Wiggins.
The Octopus Project performed Hexadecagon live twice to over-capacity crowds during SXSW 2010 to emphatically positive reception. Paste Magazine said of the show, “if there’s a such thing as a happiness seizure, be prepared to have one,” while The Austin American Statesman described the event as, “the trippiest, most elaborate thing the Octopus Project have ever done, and that’s a very tall order.” USA Today ranked the performance one of its top five shows of SXSW.
The band spent the next two months recording in their Austin home studio and mixing in Dallas with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions In the Sky, Clinic, The Walkmen). The result is a multi-layered, high-definition, ultra-widescreen sonic universe, re-arranged and re-orchestrated to create an engrossing experience for anyone with a pair of speakers or headphones.
The Octopus Project will bring elements of Hexadecagon on the road with them for a fall tour, with dates to be announced shortly. Don’t miss them!

FAKE PROBLEMS SET TO RELEASE REAL GHOSTS CAUGHT ON TAPE NEW ALBUM IN STORES AND ONLINE VIA SIDEONEDUMMY RECORDS ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2010
BAND TO TOUR WITH THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM IN
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER
SideOneDummy Records is excited to announce the September 21 release of Real Ghosts Caught On Tape, the sophomore album from Naples, FL’s Fake Problems. Fake Problems are back and have successfully reinvented themselves again with their most accomplished album to date, an album that draws influence from a wide variety indie-rock, ’60s girl-groups, and Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ production style.
Real Ghosts Caught On Tape was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero) in the Spring of 2010 in Los Angeles, CA. The bright and beachy environment of Southern California shines through on the record, as does the reserved and understated vibe of these songs, such as the eerie “Songs for Teenagers” where Chris Farren poignantly delivers “Looking for drugs in all the wrong places, wanted to be famous but ended up nameless.”
Lead single, “Soulless,” is carefully crafted with lush O’s and A’s in the vein of Phil Spector’s ’60s girl-group projects. Lending their backing vocals were longtime friends and fans Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat from the critically-acclaimed television series Arrested Development. As Farren sings “I was Soulless, Soulless, broken-down, I was hollow as a Ghost, but you have brought me back to life and revived the hope” you can tell Farren has lived through each line and syllable he so tastefully delivers. If nothing else, Real Ghosts Caught On Tape is the perfect soundtrack for embarking out of darkness and into the light, showcasing a band that has grown to new artistic heights.
Fake Problems are currently performing on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, and are certainly one of the more “left of center” bands on the tour, which has enabled them to captivate old and new fans alike as well as make new friends in each city. Fake Problems will also be supporting The Gaslight Anthem on their Fall tour in September and October. More dates for that tour to be announced shortly.

Pop singer Lady Gaga, well known for her songs like ‘Alejandro’ and ‘Bad Romance’ as well as her… shall we say out there dressing style, has made history (for the moment) twice. That’s right: she broke two records!
The first is that she had 13 nominations overall, and the other is that two nominations in the ‘Video of the Year’ award, for her songs Bad Romance and Telephone.

TRAINWRECK’S “TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD” TOUR
CHUGS ACROSS U.S. THIS FALL
Southern-fried ‘Wreck And Roll’ from Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass and Members of the D’s Band Tastes Just As Delicious In The Dining Car
Trainwreck, fronted by Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass and “Lee of the D” announced today that they embark on a 20-date aptly named “Transcontinental Railroad” tour across the country and back again. They will be busting ear fannies and melting faces officially in the name of Wreck N Roll. They hit the road in support of their debut album The Wreckoning, released earlier this year.
Kyle Gass (aka Klip Calhoun) has described Trainwreck at various times as “Molly Hatchett meets Jethro Tull meets The Runaways,” “Scoobie Doo meets CSI” and “…a cornucopia of rock and a 5-headed hydra of pleasure”. The band’s classic/prog/Southern boogie yeehaw freakshow will head out on tour beginning at Dipiazza’s in Long Beach, CA. After a couple of weeks of rest from that brain-frying gig, they will cut a swath a mile wide from smoggy Southern California to the Eastern Seaboard. From there, it’s onto the Midwest, the Rocky Mountains and back to the West Coast. Confirmed tour dates are:
9/04 @ Dipiazza Restaurant, Long Beach, CA
9/15 @ Showcase Live!, Foxborough, MA
9/16 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY
9/17 @ Mohawk Place, Buffalo, NY
9/18 @ Jillian’s of Albany, Albany, NY
9/20 @ Bourbon Street, Baltimore, MD
9/21 @ Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY
9/23 @ Frankie’s, Toledo, OH
9/25 @ Beat Kitchen, Chicago, IL
9/27 @ 400 Bar, Minneapolis, MN
9/28 @ Nutty’s North, Sioux Falls, SD
9/30 @ Cervantes’, Denver, CO
10/1 @ Hodi’s Half Note, Fort Collins, CO
10/2 @ Triple Nickel Tavern, Colorado Springs, CO
10/4 @ Belly Up Aspen, Aspen, CO
10/5 @ Urban Lounge, Salt Lake City, UT
10/6 @ Tonic Bar, Reno, NV
10/8 @ Red Fox Tavern, Eureka, CA
10/9 @ The New Parish, Oakland, CA
10/10 @ Fishlips Bar & Grill, Bakersfield, CA
This is the band’s third tour of the United States this year in support of The Wreckoning, their 15-song opus featuring instant classics such as “Milk The Cobra”, “Bothered & Hot” and “El Mustachio”. All tracks highlight the band’s par-tay credo. Gass warns “Prepare yourself. Trainwreck is coming to your town. Lock up your daughters, don’t tell your mothers. It’s going to be a fandango.” You don’t even want to know about the van, after securing a Hot Sauce deal earlier this year with flavors for each band member.
Trainwreck’s absurdist comedy stage banter and lyrics are derived from characters they’ve developed within the band; essentially living caricatures of themselves. Never ones to shy away from big guitars (or occasional flute fugues and fantasy), Trainwreck have earned themselves fans all over the globe headlining venues in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. They have supported bands such as Reverend Horton Heat, Vida Blue (Page from Phish), Blues Traveler and have performed on The Jimmy Kimmel Show and Current TV.
ABOUT TRAINWRECK
Trainwreck is: Kyle Gass (aka Klip Calhoun) from Tenacious D, Jason Reed (aka “Lee of the D” & biker hayseed Darryl Donald), John Konesky (aka John Bartholomew Shredman), John Spiker (aka Boy Johnny) and Nate Rothacker (aka Dallas St. Bernard). All are international bros of suspicious character.
PopMatters Premieres Gasoline Silver’s “It’s All Over But the Cryin’” Gasoline Silver Announces New Tour Dates, Headlining Le Poisson Rouge + More!
“I’ll tell you who I really like—he’s a young cat, and he’s up in Minneapolis now—but he’s originally from Memphis. His name’s Ron Franklin, and he’s got a band called Gasoline Silver—it’s really cool.” – Peter Case
“Minneapolis’ Gasoline Silver are a rawk band drawing influences from ’70s American punk and a bit of British blues rock and Stax soul.” – PopMatters
After two sold out shows at McCabe’s playing guitar alongside the legendary Peter Case (Plim Souls, The Nerves), indie-bluesman Ron Franklin is taking his new band, the Twin-Cities based Gasoline Silver, on the road.
Headlining great venues such as Le Poisson Rouge, Gasoline Silver will have the co-founders of the Kropotkins opening each date. Composer Dave Soldier will take one half hour to perform Chopin’s Minute Waltz on the concert grand piano. Sean Haggerty’s live electronic processing will bring out timbres hidden deep within the piece that can only be noticed when it is performed extremely slow. Jonathan Kane’s February will perform their minimalist Fender-trance instrumentals, described by Rolling Stone as “Wedding the brutal severity of Delta country boogie and Seventies German pulse rock – all dead-ahead motion and mounting detail…Epic.” Franklin previously performed at Le Poisson Rouge at last year’s Robert Palmer tribute. A sometime member of the Kropotkins, in that band he has played cane fife, marching drums, and harmonica.
Want a sneak peek of these psych-punk bluesmen with a whole lot of soul? Check out the PopMatters premiere of Gasoline Silver’s live video for “It’s All Over But The Cryin’”, and feel free to post and share. The video, featuring Josh Misner on synths, Andy Hertel on drums, and Ron on guitar/vox, is a gorgeous throwback to when music videos were more music documentaries, allowing the music and musicianship be at the forefront.

ADAM HAWORTH STEPHENS CONFIRMS TOUR WITH THE FELICE BROTHERS DEBUT SOLO ALBUM, WE LIVE ON CLIFFS, OUT SEPTEMBER 28th
Adam Haworth Stephens, lead singer and songwriter of acclaimed duo Two Gallants, is excited to join The Felice Brothers for a seven-week fall tour. Beginning October 5th in Portland, OR, Stephens will hit the road with a brand new collection of songs from his debut solo album WE LIVE ON CLIFFS. To kick off the tour, Stephens will headline The Independent in his hometown of San Francisco, CA on October 2nd.
Set for a September 28th release on Saddle Creek, WE LIVE ON CLIFFS is full of folk-rock songs that spotlight Stephens’ gift for capturing and exploring the trials of love, loss and hope. With songwriting that has been praised by Pitchfork as “ambitious, heady, and riddled with histrionics” this debut recounts personal experiences with well-crafted visceral songs that share the same spirit and rebelliousness as some of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century. Stephens “shares the same spirit as a young, reckless Johnny Cash, or a pre-electric Bob Dylan” hails the NME.
Stephens will give fans a behind the scenes look at the making of this brilliant new album with a short that features personal footage taken during recording sessions, rehearsals and at home. Fans can view this footage and download first track “The Cities That You’ve Burned” at www.adamhaworthstephens.com.

Antony and the Johnsons to Release Thank You For Your Love EP on August 24
Antony and the Johnsons will release their five track EP “Thank You For Your Love” on August 24th via Secretly Canadian. The title-track is the lead single from the forthcoming album “Swanlights” also being released by Secretly Canadian on October 12. The album is now available for pre-order including bundles consisting of the full length CD and EP, vinyl LP and EP, and book with CD and EP will be available for sale on August 5th. Those who purchase the bundles will instantly receive an advance download of the EP. The pre-order is up here.
On “Thank You For Your Love”, Antony expresses a soul-infused cry of gratitude, but the song progresses into urgency, leaving behind the 4/4 rhythms and breaking into an emotional gallop that reveals an underlying pathos. “You Are The Treasure” is the calm after the storm, “My Lord My Love” closes the A side as a song for a lost childhood. The B side features two unusual covers accompanied by Kevin Barker on Acoustic Guitar, the first is Bob Dylan’s “Pressing On”, Antony’s take is sweet, upbeat and beautiful. “Imagine” collaboration with avant-garde ambient composer William Basinski is a foreboding take on John Lennon’s hallowed song.
Artwork for the EP features photographs Antony took when he first arrived in NYC as a teenager in the early 90’s.
Antony and the Johnsons will also release their new album, “Swanlights”, on October 12th in the US via Secretly Canadian. Abrams Image will simultaneously release a special edition of “Swanlights” which will include the CD inside a 144-page hard cover book containing Antony’s paintings, collages, photography and writing. The album only version of “Swanlights” on Secretly Canadian will also include the song “Flétta”, a duet with Björk. The album and book are a continuation of Antony’s work exploring his connection to the natural world.

Cheyenne Marie Mize Before Lately (sonaBLAST! Records; October 12)
Download the track “Best” from the album HERE
“…honeyed voice, soulful poetry, and haunting folk-blues melodies”
- Performer Magazine
Cheyenne Marie Mize’s debut full-length album, Before Lately, is by no means her first foray into music. She is what some would consider an “old soul,” at least in musical terms. Cheyenne’s hometown of Louisville, KY is known for pushing the boundaries of the homegrown sound. A sound that is continuously redefined by Mize, and her friends and contemporaries Ben Sollee, Will Oldham’s alter-ego Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket crafting music that is an amalgamation of contradictions – rugged and gentle, innocent and forlorn, spacious and intimate, desolate and uplifting.
Her introduction to the world as a solo artist came in the form of a joint EP recorded with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, in whose band she was a touring member. The two handpicked a collection of 19th century American parlor music for what would become Among The Gold, and a subsequent tour with Ben Sollee to promote his Sub Pop collaboration with Daniel Martin Moore earlier this year further established Cheyenne as an artist to watch.
And now comes Before Lately, a collection of ten songs dripping in Cheyenne’s honey-tinged vocals and raw emotion. The album begins with “Best” and Cheyenne singing “I tried my hardest to be what you wanted/But now we both see it was all for the best.” You can hear the truth in her voice and in her playing. The sparse instrumentation on “Rest” forces the listener to sit back and hear her – really hear her. But there will be no arguments.
“Kind” features the playful warning “Do what you want to do/Say what you say/But be kind/Because my heart is set on you.” There’s no mistaking her intent. The stunning “With(out)” showcases the control that Cheyenne has in her message. With a simple guitar, the song builds slowly on the emotionally honest lyrics and her delivery. “I don’t know if I can do what it takes/ to be with you/ And I don’t know if I can take/what it does to me/to be without you.” A painful dilemma wrapped up in a gorgeous song.
It’s the emotion, the delivery, the style, the grace that sets Cheyenne apart. There is no mistaking the fact that Cheyenne is special. One listen of Before Lately will convince you of that. Just try to not fall in love with her. Just try. She’ll win you over every time. And you’ll be better for it.

FANTASY RECORDS GETS DENGUE FEVER
Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group Set to Release Fourth Album from Renowned Cambodian-American Rock Band Worldwide in Spring 2011
Cambodian-American rock band Dengue Fever and Fantasy Records, a division of Concord Music Group, announced today that they have reached an agreement to release the band’s next record worldwide.
Dengue Fever is currently recording their fourth full-length, as-yet-untitled album at the renowned Village studios in West L.A. and their own Shoebox Studios in Los Feliz with a target release date of Spring 2011. The forthcoming record features all new material and tracks in both Khmer and English as does their most recent offering, 2008’s highly acclaimed, Venus on Earth.
Dengue Fever’s ascent from local eastside Los Angeles indie band to international pop attraction has been a steady climb. Known for their high- energy live shows at clubs, theaters and festivals, the band has garnered attention from some unconventional corners. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett chose their song “One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula” as his second favorite song of the decade in Rolling Stone; in 2010, Dengue Fever was the answer of a question on Jeopardy!; and, True Blood, HBO’s smash television series not only featured band’s music but also named an entire episode after their composition, “Escape from Dragon House.”
The band has garnered critical praise from all over the world. Amazon.com named Dengue Fever’s second album “Escape From Dragon House” the #1 International Release of the year, Spin magazine featured the band in their ‘Breaking Out’ section, and high profile features have appeared in the New York Times, Magnet, Wired, and N.P.R.’s “Fresh Air”, just to name a few.
Worldwide media includes features in Time Magazine International, UK’s Mojo magazine, Voice of America, Norway’s NRK television and Cambodia’s CTN. Topping it all off, the band appeared on the BBC’s popular British television series Later With Jools Holland. Ray Davies of the Kinks, also appearing on the program, said “They sound like a cross between Blondie and Led Zeppelin and I should know, I’ve toured with both.”
In May, Dengue Fever returned from a whirlwind world tour of Norway, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Cambodia. While in Cambodia, the band was invited to headline a special event sponsored by the Embassy of the United States of America in honor of the 60th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cambodia. They also headlined a benefit in conjunction with Cambodian Living Arts, an organization that aims to preserve traditional Cambodian music and dance.

Junip is a Gothenburg, Sweden-based rock trio that is fronted by acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist José González. The band was formed in the late ’90s by González along with drummer Elias Araya and organ and moog player Tobias Winterkorn. The early critical response to the band has been glowing. Pitchfork gave the Rope & Summit EP an 8.0 rating, saying that the music favors “simplicity and shade while retaining the uncluttered sonic arranging that so often serves as a trademark of Gonzalez’s…we won’t have to wait long to hear more from Junip, and if it holds serve from Rope, the only disappointment will be that Gonzalez could’ve been holding out on us for too long.” Under the Radar said, “Gonzalez purists will not be able to resist the charms of Junip,” while the Seattle Weekly called them “stellar.”
The band did a mini tour of the states in June and has been playing the European festival circuit all summer. Montreal’s Winter Gloves set to tour North America in support of All Red.
‘Plastic Slides’ featured in the band’s ‘making of’ footage from the studio.
Toronto — Upon the release of their stunning new album All Red, Montreal’s Winter Gloves will pack up the van for an extensive tour of North American (dates below – western dates will be announced soon). The band’s second studio album will be available from Paper Bag Records on CD, digital download and limited-edition red vinyl on September 7th. The band has also just posted ‘making of’ studio footage which features one of the album’s stand-out tracks “Plastic Slides” . “Plastic Slides” is available for download in its original form along with a new remix of the track from Teen Daze
All Red is Winter Gloves’ sophomore release on Paper Bag Records, a collection of ten songs that the band had been tinkering with on and off-stage during their past year on the road, and brought back to their Montreal studio to record over the past winter. In a return to the roots of the original EP that first introduced Winter Gloves’ poppy mix of gritty bass and synths sound, All Red was produced by the band’s Charles F (lead singer, guitar, synths). The foursome is rounded out with Patrick Sayers on drums, Vincent Chalifour on bass and synths, and Nico Ormiston on guitar and bringing back the glockenspiel that was a well-mentioned highlight on their debut about a girl album.
With only a handful of live shows behind them at the beginning of 2008, Winter Gloves were already receiving invitations to join bands like Tokyo Police Club on a series of sold-out tour dates. Such well-attended shows helped spread what was becoming the wildfire of the earlier, self-released “Let Me Drive” EP. After the Canadian release of their full-length in the Fall of 2008, the band continued on the same foot as things had started with dates alongside Tokyo Police Club and a slot at Toronto’s Virgin Festival before hitting the road across Canada with You Say Party, Thunderheist and Beast. Reactions to the debut album and these shows immediately secured showcase opportunities at International conferences, invitations for further touring and earned spots on “Best of 2008” year end lists including “Best New Artist” from iTunes Canada.
